A humpback whale has been recorded travelling more than 15,000km between Brazil and Australia, in what researchers believe is the longest distance ever documented between sightings of an individual humpback whale.
The whale was first photographed in 2003 at Abrolhos Bank, off the coast of Bahia in north-eastern Brazil - the country’s main humpback whale nursery. Remarkably, the same individual was photographed again 22 years later, in September 2025, in Hervey Bay, off Queensland, Australia.
The discovery was made possible through photo-identification. Like fingerprints in humans, the underside of a humpback whale’s tail - known as the fluke - carries unique markings, patterns and scars that allow individuals to be recognised. Researchers and citizen scientists upload sightings to platforms such as Happywhale, where artificial intelligence can help match animals across huge distances and long time periods.
The finding is extraordinary not only because of the distance, but because it links two populations usually associated with very different ocean regions. The study also identified another humpback that moved in the opposite direction, from eastern Australia to Brazil, suggesting rare exchanges between these breeding populations. Researchers believe these may be exceptional, possibly once-in-a-lifetime movements rather than regular migration shifts.
For ORCA, the story is a powerful reminder of why long-term monitoring matters. Every whale sighting has the potential to add another piece to a much bigger ocean story - helping scientists understand migration, population links and how whales use the seas over decades.
It also underlines why whale conservation cannot stop at national borders. Humpbacks move through vast, changing ocean spaces, facing threats including vessel strike, entanglement, noise, pollution and climate-driven changes to prey. Protecting them means countries, researchers, ship operators and citizen scientists working together across entire ocean basins.
