ORCA has a long-term collaboration with Happywhale, a citizen science photo ID project. We’re thrilled to announce that we’re now starting to combine our OceanWatchers data with Happywhale’s whale database to help advance conservation efforts for whales and dolphins!
We’re calling on all of our dedicated Marine Mammal Surveyors who have taken photos of whales during their Ferry Surveys or Saga Cruise Surveys for ORCA to submit their shots, even if these photos have already been submitted from your own Happywhale accounts.
Photos of whales taken whilst using the OceanWatchers app to collect data in your own time or during a Sea Safari can also be submitted if you wish.
All photos will then be submitted centrally from an ORCA account to ensure our data can be accurately matched.
This is an exciting project, so if you have photos of any of the following species, please let us know by emailing [email protected] and we will provide further details on how to upload them:
- Blue whales
- Humpback whales
- Right whales
- Fin whales
- Orca / Killer whales
- Sei whales
More information about Happywhale and the types of photos they need can be found here.
Thank you for helping us combine these incredible datasets and contribute to whale and dolphin conservation!
