ORCA has welcomed the publication of its letter in the Shields Gazette, following coverage of a viral video showing jet skiers riding alongside a humpback whale near South Shields Pier. The newspaper had described the video as “impressive”.

ORCA wrote to the Gazette highlighting concerns that the behaviour could disturb the whale and place both the animal and people on the water at risk.

While sightings of whales around the UK coast are always exciting, ORCA was keen to ensure that the public message was clear: these encounters must be enjoyed responsibly.

In its letter, ORCA stressed that whales and dolphins are legally protected in England, and that deliberate or reckless disturbance can be an offence. Fast-moving craft approaching a whale can cause stress, interrupt natural behaviour and increase the risk of collision or injury.

The response also highlighted that humpback whales are slowly recovering after centuries of commercial whaling. As numbers increase, sightings in UK waters may become more common making public awareness even more important.

ORCA is pleased that the Shields Gazette gave space to this important conservation message, helping to balance the excitement generated by the sighting with a reminder that whales are wild animals and must be treated with care.

Anyone lucky enough to see a whale, dolphin or porpoise should keep a safe distance, avoid approaching or chasing the animal, and follow responsible wildlife-watching guidance.
